For Christians the world over, Advent marks the beginning of the Church’s liturgical year, calling people of faith to prepare their minds and hearts for the incarnation of God’s word in the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, the one whom we affirm to be the Christ, the anointed one of God. Beginning on Sunday, December 3 and continuing through Sunday, December 24, it invites us to reread and ponder those scriptures in which our ancestors longed for the coming of Messiah and, “in the fullness of time,” came to see in Jesus the fulfillment of their longings.
During Advent each year the Church creates a calendar of readings drawn from the prophets, gospels, epistles and psalms intended to be read and prayerfully considered for each of the 21 days of Advent. Following the lectionary of texts for the 2023 season, I have written short meditations, personal reflections if you will, based on one or more of those biblical texts for each day of this important season of the liturgical year. I hope they speak to you in ways that are both thought-provoking and spiritually helpful.
By clicking the pull down tab at the top of this website you will see these reflections indexed for each week of the 2023 Advent Season. Each Friday in December I will publish seven more meditations, starting with Sunday of the week to come and concluding with the fourth Sunday’s lectionary selections for Christmas Eve. I welcome any comments you may wish to send me, either through this website’s Contact pull-down or via my email: wsummerhill@gmail.com.
